00839 NFPO: A Survey of Standards Under Part 3 of the Handbook This full-day seminar provides an overview of the accounting standards for non-government controlled not-for-profit organizations (NFPOs) under Part III of the CPA Canada Handbook. It reviews the application of GAAP with an emphasis on the areas where choices have to be made in the preparation of financial statements.
Part III of the CPA Canada Handbook provides standards that are unique to non-government private not-for-profit organizations. In addition, the underlying premise is in the standards that there should be no differences in accounting between profit-oriented enterprises and not-for-profit organizations when the circumstances and transactions are the same (other than for matters included in Part III). NFPOs are therefore also directed to Part II of the CPA Canada Handbook, Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE). As a result this seminar will also review some of the more relevant standards under ASPE.Notes Those involved in larger NFPOs may prefer to attend the full-day seminar: Not-for-Profit Organizations & Registered Charities: Accounting, Auditing & Taxation Issues. It should be noted that a NFPO can also elect to apply Part I, IFRS. This seminar will not discuss this option in detail.

01707 NEW Big Data- An Introduction for Non-Technical People Every few years a new innovation comes through the technology world and it has the potential to completely change the way that people interact and relate with technology. These seismic shifts influence companies and cause them to reconsider how they design and deliver a lot of their traditional activities: marketing, customer service, purchasing, internal reporting, etc. PC Era, pervasive and high speed internet, smart phone and mobile computing are just a few examples of these breakthrough revolutions. Big Data and Social Media are potentially poised to be one of the next “big things” which shakes up business. Large companies and tech focused firms have already jumped on the bandwagon. According to Gartner research 6 Million jobs will be created in the U.S. by the big data driven economy in the next 4 years. But what about those of us who are not at google? What do they do to tap into the big-data tidal wave? Unfortunately Big Data and Social Media analysis are not obvious things to understand and grasp. 01703 NEW Excel with Macros & VBA Level 2 As is done in Level 1 training, a key aspect to this course is learning to use “Macro Recording Best Practices”. During Level 2 best practices include “How to use Multiple Files” and “How to Automate Excel’s various Data Analysis Features”. These best practices are used “Prior to Macro Recording, During Macro Recording, and Following Macro Recording”. As with Level 1 Training, this approach is very different from the traditional Code-Centric approach taught by the vast majority of VBA courses. As a result, students learn to automate the above analyses, by generating the majority of VBA code required and learning to tweak or enhance the generated code. Each Worksheet Oriented Macro Recording Session, is followed by the use of Excel’s VB (Visual Basic) Editor for the examination, and as needed, modification of generated VBA code. This exposes students to manual VBA coding in very small doses. Thus, during Training Levels 1 and 2 students are being prepared for total VBA coding in Level 3. In addition to the “How to automate…” topics mentioned below, key aspects to this training include learning: When to use “Permanent” versus “Current Period” Links between Files, below How to Make use of Certain Macro Tools Included with the Training to Eliminate Otherwise Complex Manual VBA Coding , The Importance of Creating and Testing a Macro Recording Plan (Prior to Actual Recording), Options for Dealing with File Paths Generated by the Macro Recorder during a File Open, How to Introduce Loops and Variables into Recorder Macro Code, How to Automatically Detect and Eliminate “Variable Name” Errors, and Two Ways to Handle Macro Run-time Errors so that User Friendly Messages are Displayed whenever such an Error Occurs. NOTE: Each course includes an Online Student Workbook (eBook), along with the Excel Files used during video training exercises. Training Videos include an On Screen Instructor which gives the feel of a live training session. And, a Responsive Help Ticketing System is used for online support, with Screen Sharing available, if needed. Prerequisites: Prior to this course, “Excel with Macros & VBA – Level 1” training is required. Level 2 training builds upon the concepts and skills covered in the Level 1 course. 01704 NEW Excel with Macros & VBA Level 3 Unlike Levels 1 and 2 training, this course takes a first step towards “Total VBA Coding” to create UDFs “from scratch”. Even so, based on Levels 1 and 2 training experience students have had, using the VB Editor, plus their familiarity with VBA coding basics, this transition to a 100% coding experience is a somewhat natural next step. In addition to the Learning Outcomes mentioned below, key aspects to this training include learning: The 4 Cell Reference methods used in creating Worksheet Formulas  and Functions, How to Show All Worksheet Formulas Over All Cells, Keyboard Shortcut that Cycles Through Cell Reference Options, When a Range Name Can Be Used in a Formula/Function, Steps to Creating a First UDF in a Workbook, The Critical Step Required within a UDF to Return a Value to a Cell, VBA Conditional Logic Alternatives and What’s Best for a UDF, How to Use Compound Conditional Operators AND/OR/NOT, The 3 Major Benefits Experienced through Use of UDFs, How to Create User Help for a UDF, How to Use Public and Private UDFs, How to Make Use of a Fiscal Year/Quarter UDF, Make the VLOOKUP Unbreakable, and How to Know if a Worksheet Function is also Useable within VBA. 01125 Conversation, Connection & Influence : Build Relationships & Get Things Done Conversational competence might be the single most overlooked skill we fail to teach. It might sound like a funny question, but we have to ask ourselves: Is there any 21st-century skill more important than being able to sustain coherent, confident conversation?” This session will help you build a blueprint for building trusting, respectful relationships. Great conversations go beyond the mechanics of speaking and listening. There is no reason to learn how to show you’re paying attention if you are in fact paying attention.  A great conversation requires we listen with curiosity and genuine interest. They are transformative, not transactional. They leave you feeling something. They are emotional. They spark thinking. They create new energy, insight and awareness. People leave a real and inspiring conversation wanting to take action and feeling excited about what is next! What if you could have those kind of heartfelt meaningful conversations in ten minutes or less? If you would like your interactions to have a more positive moving impact you can learn what it takes. Conversations can be less polarized, less divisive, more compelling and inspiring and they can change your life and leadership! This session will cover off ten basic rules, but if you just choose one and master it, you will already enjoy better connections with more sway and influence. 01132 The Leadership Evolution: Moving From Doer to Leader Now, more than ever, organizations look to their formal and informal leaders as the key to remaining effective in today’s environment. Whether you have direct reports or not, other people look to you to clarify, organize, and build a framework for the meaning of their work. The extent to which others see you in this way makes you a leader. As a leader, your organization expects that you will help to bring out the best in others while achieving high levels of business results. However, if you were promoted into leadership because of your technical skills or abilities, or if others look to you because you are an expert, you may not be able to meet the expectations of leadership yet. This full-day seminar is specifically designed to help you identify those things you must let go of, as well as those things you must learn to develop, that will help you achieve the expectations organizations and people have of you as a leader. You will experience a reframe in your thinking about how you lead and unleash your ability to exponentially increase your contribution to your organization. A strong Board of Directors presents any organization with the opportunity to achieve a point of competitive differentiation, yet sadly, the reality is just the opposite – boards that are overly cautious and caught up in the semantics of governing. Executives and directors should be working cooperatively to maximize the contribution of their board and individual directors. 01717 NEW The Sustainability Scorecard Organizations need to achieve financial success – but also be aware of their impact on society and the environment. How the public associated Nike contractor’s use of child labour with the Nike brand, or environmental issues back to tar-sands companies are examples of these new corporate obligations. Sustainability – what is also known as the triple bottom line – is about an organization’s contribution to financial success, as well as its impact on society and the environment. Accountants are being asked to “keep score” against these new imperatives. This seminar brings the latest world-class thinking in this area to you…and ironically the leading thinkers and execution is coming from Canadians! Professionals are in demand as community board members and volunteering can be very rewarding – but not all boards are created equally. Before you commit, find out about the third sector in general, and the types of Not-for-Profits in particular, and what might be expected by the different types of boards and directors on them. 01693 NEW Building Better Work Relationships Is there someone at your office that you just don’t “get” and drains your energy? That no matter how much you try, you can’t get them to see your point or change their ways? This workshop uses the Everything DiSC™ tool to help you gain important insights into peoples’ communication preferences and working styles. The immediate feedback received from this workshop gives you the practical tools needed to build and sustain more harmonious and productive relationships in all aspects of your life. The day begins by using Everything DiSC™ to first understand your preferred working style and the styles of others. You will become more aware of your motivators and default working modes and how they affect people with other styles. Understanding these differences will help you flex your style and adapt to the needs of the situation and the group. This leads to more positive, productive relationships and helps you to navigate conflict during tough times. You will have the opportunity to communicate how others can best work with you and learn the recipe for success in communicating and working with people of different styles. Once you internalize this information it helps to make an internal shift so that it doesn’t feel like heavy lifting anymore. Erin Waddell Full-Day EDM December 12, 2017 08:30-16:00 Register Now

01672 NEW Trust, Truth & Consequences: Build a Culture that takes the High Road & Values Integrity   “A relationship without trust is like a phone without service. And what do you do with a phone without service? Play games.” –Drake You can tell the amount of trust in an organization by the amount of laughter you hear in the hallways. Trust is palpable as vibrant energy, and an openness and freedom to express emotion, thoughts and ideas. It is like taking the temperature of an office to determine overall health and vitality. It builds good relationships and makes personal and business success possible. If there is no trust relationships falter, businesses stall, and health suffers. This seminar will define and make trust more tangible in how it is built and eroded over time. Through stories and examples, this session will provide insight, deeper understanding and valuable lessons on how to increase trust… for individuals and organizations. 01045 True Grit: How Persistence & Resilience Makes You Stronger Grit helps you succeed. It is profoundly important. The real difference in how much we achieve and how we stay invested in our work and life is not all about talent. It’s more about passion, perseverance and what researchers are calling GRIT. Is it time to build your resilience and achieve more even when the times are ridiculously challenging? Do you have the will to endure? To recover? And keep going? Want to get ahead? Challenge your conventional wisdom: getting smarter won’t help: getting grittier will. The key to resiliency – the ability to adapt to life’s changes and crises – is key to a healthy productive life. Knowing when to press on, and when to let go, and how to live with “not knowing” … being able to feel secure and confident when the answers are unclear and the future uncertain is a new imperative. Take one step at a time is not lame advice, but rather a solid approach that eases the pain in your brain as you give up the need to control the uncontrollable. You can make life more of an adventure and less of a worry. Through stories, science and practices that anyone can develop, you can transform the pain of life’s overwhelm into a meaningful and thriving life. A challenge response can become automatic, and “just the way you roll.” It is a conviction that whatever happens I will stay in the game, and play better than I ever have. We need this confidence now. It is the path to our greatest potential.  Change the way you think, change how you respond, and it will change the experience of your life.   Tammy Robertson Full-Day CAL October 23, 2017 08:30-16:00 Register Now

01584 The Power of Habit… How to Change… “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act then, but a habit.” Aristotle said that. When you change your habits, you change your life. Stop procrastinating, start exercising, eat better, sleep better, end the distraction, and find your “happy place” … how hard can it be? It’s simple and the thing about real change is it’s hard. Armed with the right tools and practices though, you can decide to become the best version of yourself. If not now, when? Now is the time to live life the way you want! In this full-day seminar, you will take an honest look at the habits that are creating the life that you want and the ones that are getting in the way. They are different for everyone and may include time, health, creativity, success and communication habits. The key to change is self-awareness, and conscious choice and then setting up your day to support your intentions. You will look at the surprising truth of how willpower runs out, how to reduce temptation, and make the right choice the easy one. Simple shifts make change easier. 01255 Thinking on your Feet Have you ever been caught off guard by a question or comment when leading a team meeting or delivering a presentation? Have you ever looked back at your reaction and felt that you could have handled things differently? Most people have interacted with leaders who they would say are great at “thinking on their feet”. They would describe these individuals as having an ability to handle any challenging conversation or question with grace and aplomb. In this way, the ability to “think on your feet” has typically been seen as something leaders are born with. However, the ability to react to a challenging dialogue in real time to achieve an optimal outcome can be learned. There are tools and techniques that can be practiced that will help leaders respond with confidence and calm to the unexpected. This half-day seminar will give you tools to think on your feet.

00996 Your Portfolio is Broken Most people get better investment results by being a “better consumer” of investment products and services versus attempts to become a faster and smarter investor or hiring the next faster and smarter advisor or simply buying more products and predictions offered by the investment industry. Most frustrated investors don’t hold a diversified portfolio designed to earn the best return for the risk that they are taking. More commonly they simply have a collection of investments, accumulated through the years that take too much risk, under-perform the market return, incur excessive fees and unnecessary tax. These problems aren’t solved by buying more investment products or predictions. As well, multi-year “consumer friendly” reforms are being implemented by the Canadian Securities Association (provincial securities regulators) starting in 2013 and continuing each year until 2016. These reforms are intended to correct the “knowledge asymmetry” between the investment industry and investors and were the result of studies that showed repeatedly – investors did not know how much their investments were costing them or how their advisor is compensated. As a result over the next several years, commissions on bond trades, mutual fund deferred sales charges, and trailer fees which previously were unreported to the investor – will now have to be disclosed. For most investment firms this is the first time that this critical information will be required to be disclosed to investors. 01471 Enough Bull: How to Retire Well without the Stock Market, Mutual Funds or Even an Investment Advisor The stock market crash of 2008 has proven one thing: traditional retirement planning advice is way too risky. Trusting the stock market is like gambling with your family’s future. But how do you plan for retirement without the possibility of losing up to 50% of your investments in a short period of time? The simple truth is that it is possible to retire well using guaranteed, safe fixed-income products like GICs that can never decline in value combined with government defined benefit pension plans including the CPP and OAS. This half-day seminar will start with what should be the number one rule of personal finance: avoid any strategy that could lead to personal financial disaster. You’ll learn all about the Ponzi cons and Madoff scams that trapped many people. You will then discover how to invest in 100% safe investments that can never decline in value. We’ll compare returns of the stock market to simple GICs over the last decade and longer. You might be surprised at the results. Notes: Each participant will get a copy of Enough Bull: How to Retire Well without the Stock Market, Mutual Funds or even an Investment Advisor as well as the “Money Maximizer” spreadsheet that computers your family’s combined taxable income, income taxes and resulting after tax cash. 00919 Cash Cows, Pigs & Jackpots: the Simplest Personal Finance Strategy Ever The previously accepted method of building wealth doesn’t work anymore. The plain honest truth when it comes to personal finances is very simple: our quest to build wealth and secure a comfortable retirement often ends up making us poor and others rich. We are persuaded that the way to get wealthy is to build our assets and net worth, since that is the “true” measure of wealth. So we end up trying to build our assets – we load up on real estate – we buy big houses and rental properties. We put money into the stock market, many of us using expensive mutual funds. And many of us use debt to do the building. But this strategy is deeply flawed. It’s faulty logic that is sending many Canadians, and people around the world, on a journey to the poorhouse. That’s because it ignores the one thing that over-rides any strategy designed to build wealth. It ignores the basic principle that has always existed. It ignores the base logic that anyone who is truly rich knows: what we should really be focused on is not getting rich but plain old cash flow. Notes: Each participant will get a copy of presenter David Trahair’s book Cash Cows, Pigs and Jackpots: The Simplest Personal Finance Strategy Ever as well as spreadsheets including the “House Rent versus Buy Analyzer” and the “Cash Cow Decision Maker”.
